Northeastern Thailand (Isan)
Slippery laterite surfaces. Many rural roads in Isan are surfaced with laterite, a iron-rich soil that becomes extremely slippery when wet. Even four-wheel-drive vehicles can lose traction on wet laterite, and the transition from asphalt to laterite at village boundaries can catch drivers by surprise.
Flash flooding on plains. The flat terrain of the Khorat Plateau means that water spreads rather than drains quickly. What appears to be a shallow flooded section of road may conceal a deep washout beneath.

Road damage. Floodwater erodes road bases and shoulders. Roads that appear intact may have been undermined, particularly at the edges. The asphalt surface may remain while the substrate beneath has washed away, creating a thin bridge that can collapse under a vehicle's weight.
Debris. Floodwater deposits debris on roadways: branches, mud, rocks, garbage, and occasionally larger items like furniture or construction materials. Roads that have recently been flooded should be driven at reduced speed until you have confirmed the surface is clear.
Contaminated surfaces. Floodwater leaves behind a film of mud, oil, and organic matter that is extremely slippery. The first vehicles to traverse a recently flooded road are at elevated risk of skidding.
Brake drying. After driving through floodwater, brakes are wet and their effectiveness is significantly reduced. Apply the brakes lightly while driving to generate heat and evaporate the water from the pads and rotors. Test braking effectiveness at low speed before resuming normal driving.
Disease exposure. Floodwater in Thailand can contain sewage, industrial runoff, and biological hazards. Avoid contact with floodwater whenever possible. If you must wade through floodwater (e.g., to exit a stranded vehicle), wash thoroughly with soap and clean water as soon as possible afterward.
